Chapter Fourteen

The one good thing about Autumn not being able to hold her liquor is that once it was out of her system, she usually had no after effects. She woke up the following morning with no headache or queasy stomach. What she did wake up with was total humiliation.

She had thrown up on Maverick.

And while that was bad, it wasn’t as bad as rubbing against him like a dog in heat.

She squeezed her eyes shut and covered her burning face with both hands. How could she have acted so wantonly? Instead of excusing herself and getting up, the hard feel of him had melted her like butter in a hot skillet.

She lowered her hands as a thought struck her. And why had he been hard? It wasn’t like he’d grown hard when she fell on his lap. She’d felt his erection as soon as she landed. Which could only mean one thing: Maverick was as turned on by her as she was by him.

“Good mornin’, sweet sister of mine.” Spring sailed into the room. She was still in her pajamas, and with her bed head, it looked like she hadn’t been out of bed long. Her smile was bright and cheerful as she carried a tray of breakfast muffins and juice over to the nightstand and set it down.

Autumn sat up and smiled at her sister’s thoughtfulness. “Thank you, Sweetness, but you didn’t have to make me breakfast. I’m fine.”

Spring grabbed a muffin and flopped down on the bed, pretzeling her legs in front of her. “I didn’t. This is my breakfast.” She peeled back the muffin wrapper. “Now start from the beginning.” She took a big bite.

Autumn stuffed a pillow behind her back. “There’s no beginning. I just drank too much.” And became way too chatty . . . and horny. She picked up the glass of orange juice and took a sip.

Spring sent her an annoyed look. “I’m not talking about last night. I’m talking about the affair you’re having with Maverick.”

Autumn choked and spewed juice out of her mouth all over the comforter and Spring’s pajama bottoms.

“Geez, Audie,” Spring said as she reached for the napkin on the tray, “try to keep your fluids inside, would ya?”

Autumn grabbed another napkin and blotted the comforter as she tried to collect herself. “Maverick and I? Where would you get a crazy idea like that?”

Spring smiled at her. “You’re right. It is pretty crazy. But not as crazy as Maverick showing up out of a clear blue sky and attacking Summer. Now that made no sense at all. Especially when Maverick was such a good guy in college, and when he seems to be such a good guy now. Waylon really likes him, and he’s a great judge of character. So I didn’t get the entire Summer thing until I saw you sitting on his lap last night, almost setting the entire bar ablaze with your smoldering looks. Then everything started to click.” Her smile got bigger. “You did it, didn’t you? You pulled the triplet switch on Maverick.
